Tampa Strip Clubs: Quick! Name the lap dance capital of the world

February 24, 2010

Paul Allen, the founder and publisher of NightMoves magazine, thinks the city’s rep is due to the sheer number of strip clubs.
“In greater Tampa Bay, I think the last count is around 56 different clubs that are adult-oriented,” he told Tampa Bay’s 10Connects.com.
Some blame the notoriety on a decade-old law.
Ten years ago, Tampa enacted an ordinance referred to as the “six-foot rule,” requiring customers to stay six feet from the dancers.
The six-foot rule is still on the books, but it’s not enforced.
Former Tampa City Councilman Bob Buckhorn told 10Connects.com that he believes in the weeks following the six-foot rule he called Tampa the “lap dance capital of the world” and the moniker stuck.
With 56 strip clubs, Tampa isn’t about to shed its image anytime soon.
