June 8, 2010Texas: A smuggling ringleader was sentenced 17 years in jail for smuggling more than 70 people from Mexico. The police found 17 people dead, two others died later from dehydration, suffocation, and overheating. The surviving victims testified that they tried to kick out a signal light to try to get attention from a passing motorist.
Hawaii: Labor trafficking victims testify against their employer before the court. They said that some of them were underpaid and lived in a modified storage container on the farm. Each worker is from Thailand and promised a good paying job in Hawaii. They also paid $20,000 to come to Hawaii. One of the victims said that they were given moldy bread to eat.
Virginia: The police arrested three people at a massage parlor in Leesburg. The police said that all of them were Korean background, but their residential status is currently unclear. This is the fourth message parlor that the police charged with prostitution or sex trafficking related offense.
