Tampa Strip Clubs: Lawyers: ‘Stand Your Ground’ law becoming more common defense

May 1, 2012

Judges can take days to rule on “stand your ground” motions. In Monday’s hearing, which lasted eight hours and included 10 witnesses, Judge Daniel Merritt Jr. decided in just 45 minutes to deny the defense’s motion that Siskos, 42, should be immune from prosecution.
The hearing in Siskos’ case is a by-product of Florida’s controversial “stand your ground” law signed in 2005. Though no statistics are kept on how many such hearings have been held in self-defense cases, prosecutors and defense lawyers say they’re becoming more common, even when victims suffer minor injuries or defendants have weak self-defense cases. They’ve been filed on behalf of gang members, drug dealers and in spouse abuse cases, sometimes successfully, sometimes not.
“They’re almost part of due diligence,” said Tampa defense attorney Joe Caimano, who argued a successful “stand your ground” motion before a Hillsborough County judge late last year. His client, a bouncer at a strip club, shot and injured a patron who had thrown a beer bottle in his direction.

Tampa Strip Clubs: Prostitution Scandal Reveals Shortage Of Female Secret Service Agents

April 30, 2012

The agency has aggressively recruited women, targeting female-oriented career fairs and sending brochures to colleges.
“We all recognize that we want to get more women into the Secret Service,” Donovan said.
But that wasn’t easy even before the prostitution embarrassment in Colombia, which unfolded two weeks ago when a dispute over payment between a prostitute and Secret Service officer spilled into a hotel hallway. A dozen Secret Service employees and a dozen enlisted military personnel have been implicated. Although Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano said it appeared to be isolated, the agency has since confirmed it’s investigating if employees hired prostitutes and strippers ahead of President Barack Obama’s visit to El Salvador last year. The agency on Friday also announced stricter measures, including assigning chaperones on some trips to enforce new rules of conduct for agents and employees.

Tampa Escorts: Security firms look to cash in on RNC

April 29, 2012

Businesses that routinely hire off-duty law enforcement officers will be out of luck during the convention when all local officers will be on duty, Tampa police Capt. Brett Bartlett told members of the Building Owners and Managers Association of Tampa Bay recently.
Last week, Tampa police had 116 off-duty jobs — which can include special events, escorts and construction site traffic control — a total number that police spokeswoman Andrea Davis said varies greatly week to week.
But thus far, downtown businesses aren’t scrambling to install more security cameras or hire bodyguards.
Sheridan’s company, which customizes security systems to fit homes and businesses, has done about 25 free consultations since sending out a first wave of mailers but has landed just two installation jobs.
No one has asked for a bodyguard yet from Reder Investigations and Security Consulting LLC, which is advertising armed escort services for the RNC.

Daniel Ruth: Strip clubs in Tampa love the Republican National Convention too, Mr. Mayor

As the Tampa Bay Times Forum is being readied for the arrival of thousands of delegates, GOP officials, the media and indeed all the protestors, elsewhere around our quirky hamlet the adult entertainment industry (read: strippers) also is hard at work refurbishing establishments to keep up with the expected demand for conventioneers looking for some hoochie-coochie diversions after a long day of decrying the moral decline of America.
New and improved seating is being installed. Special discreet suites are being improved at such joints as Tampa Gold Club, Alibi and Scores Gentlemen’s Club and Steakhouse, where it is probably fair to say the definition of a gentleman is defined by the number of tattoos in evidence.

Tampa Adult Entertainment: Her jobs ranged from harvesting Florida seafood to selling Saks Fifth Avenue …

April 28, 2012

Martha Beneduci, 58, is a study in contrast. She can play complex music on her sleek black C. Bechstein grand piano and then go downstairs to work on a diesel boat engine or the 1936 Chevy she’s helping to restore. She once handled expensive jewelry and linens for Saks Fifth Avenue in New York, then spent 18 years cleaning fish and ramrodding the roughnecks running shrimp boats in and out of Hudson.
Her house is full of antiques and rare opalescent glass. She once photographed weddings and sewed wedding gowns in the big city. Now she seals the leaky steeple at the church. She maintains five buildings on 13 acres, distributes food for poor people and furniture for the church’s thrift shop. She also runs off prostitutes and other shady characters that drift along an ugly strip of U.S. 19 because when she needs to be, Martha Beneduci is tough.

Tampa Escorts: Massage Parlor Investigation Nets Prostitution arrest

April 28, 2012

Steffens said complaints about Miyako specifically alleged human trafficking and prostitution. They came from from nearby businesses, he said.
A woman was arrested and charged with solicitation of prostitution. Steffens said the woman Lian Jin Jin, 41, spoke enough English to communicate with officers.
Steffens declined to comment further on the human trafficking aspect, other than to say it was a concern. The Clearwater Police Department, which has a human trafficking task force, assisted the police department, as well as the Pasco County Sheriff’s Office and Department of Health.
Stephen Chellis is operator of Miyako and is someone “who’s in daily control of the business,” Steffens said.

This isn’t the first time a prostitution arrest has been linked to someone associated with Miyako, according to Steffens. He said that three Asian females were arrested on prostitution charges in 2007.
