A Dunedin woman was one of 47 people arrested on prostitution charges in Polk County over the weekend after authorities say she responded through an adult ad online. 
Meghan Nicole Power, 22, of Dexter Drive, is charged with soliciting prostitution.
Polk County detectives say they went undercover targeting suspects through online adult ads. From March 9-11, 47 people responded to the ads or met with detectives with the intent to perform sexual acts for money. Most suspects were from Polk County, detectives reported in a news release, and some were visiting.
Those arrested include a doctor, a pharmacist, a pharmaceutical salesman and a retired IRS agent, according to the sheriff’s office. Three suspects were arrested on charges of possession of narcotics, one was in possession of a concealed, stolen firearm, and one was found to be violating probation for burglary. Several of the suspects also said they were married, according to the sheriff’s office.

Melton, the prosecutor handling trafficking cases with the Bexar County DA’s office, told officials, “I can tell you we do have trafficking cases in Bexar County. … We are dealing primarily with domestic minor sex trafficking.” She outlined for lawmakers the difficulty of prosecuting such cases. “You bring a child into court who may be 15 but looks 25, who curses in the courtroom, who doesn’t want to be there. … Who doesn’t want to prosecute his or her trafficker, doesn’t want to be involved and thinks they have made a lifestyle choice because they’ve found they can make money, be independent.”

Undercover detectives conducted a two-day investigation focusing on online ads soliciting for prostitution last Thursday and Friday, according to a press release issued by thePolk County Sheriff’s OfficeMonday.
Both female and male detectives posted and answered ads for sex on Backpage.com. During the operation, 19 suspects were arrested for crimes ranging from soliciting prostitution to narcotics violations. Six suspects were confirmed or admitted to being married.
“The negative social costs of prostitution hurt families, children and communities,” said Sheriff Grady Judd said in an emailed statement. “Whether it is on the street, or online, it is illegal and we will continue to arrest those who commit or derive proceeds from prostitution. We will continue to target online escort services that promote prostitution, and as long as these sites provide the means for prostitution to occur, we will provide the trip to jail.”

CLEARWATER — It’s a little bit raunchy but a whole lot of fun.
The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas is now open for business at the Francis Wilson Playhouse in Clearwater. See it before they shut it down for good March 11.
The musical (book by Larry King and Peter Masterson; music and lyrics by Carol Hall) is based on a true story about a brothel called the Chicken Ranch, a nickname earned because patrons paid with poultry during the Depression.
Through spirited, boot-stompin’ musical numbers, the show recounts the characters, politics, good times and final days of the bordello that existed for 58 years before a TV newsman championed its demise in the 1970s.

Garcia has been at the Land O’Lakes jail since Thursday, when he was arrested on charges of raping three other women. Authorities said he assaulted two women in December and one in February. Two of the women told deputies they are prostitutes.
One victim got a partial license plate number and description of his vehicle, which led detectives to Garcia — who was then picked out of a photo lineup by the victims, reports state.
He is charged with four counts of sexual battery with a deadly weapon and two counts of kidnapping. Garcia, of 11215 Nome Ave. in Port Richey, told investigators he picked up prostitutes and paid them for oral sex, but he never used force on the women. A pellet gun was found at his house, authorities said.
