Tampa Escorts: Modern Day Slavery an Issue for Riverview Lawmaker

Tuesday, July 26th, 2011

An investigation in 2010 by the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office, U.S, Immigration and Customs Enforcement and the Clearwater/Tampa Bay area Human Trafficking Task Force led to the arrest of Mario Alberto Laguna-Guerrero, 25.
“This girl was rescued from a nightmare, which could only have gotten worse,” said Gee. “The teamwork among law enforcement agencies cannot be underestimated when it comes to protecting children and the innocent. There is one less predator on the streets, and one more reason that this task force is so valuable.”
If convicted as charged, Laguna-Guerrero faces a maximum penalty of life in federal prison.
That may be one human trafficker who’s now off the streets, said Gee. But there are more lining up to take his place.
According to the Florida Coalition Against Human Trafficking, human trafficking involves the commercial exchange and exploitation of humans including forced prostitution and pornography, involuntary labor, servitude and debt bondage.

Tampa Massage Parlors: Florida’s Tampa Bay Area ID’d as Major Hub for Human Trafficking

Sunday, July 17th, 2011

… You see them all over the place, massage parlors with signs that say they’re open until 2 a.m. seven days a week,” she said. “What kind of legitimate massage parlor is open until 2 a.m.?”
Other signs indicate directions to a rear entrance so patrons can enter the establishment surreptitiously.

Working with the Florida Department of Law Enforcement and Florida State University Center for the Advancement of Human Rights, Burgin authored a bill in 2009 designed to empower law enforcement. In addition to increasing the penalties for those convicted of the crime, Burgin’s bill would require massage parlor employees to have identification on them at all times.

Her bill would require massage parlor employees to carry a valid U.S. passport, driver’s license or Employment Authorized Document. That would give law enforcement authorization to request identification, and determine who’s working illegally, she said.

Tampa Strip Clubs: Gandy Boulevard improvement project crowding businesses

Tuesday, July 12th, 2011

Stephanie Pierce, the DOT’s project manager, said the state has an uncontested stake on the land and has made no promises. The complaints raised, she said, have been largely driven by the initial shock of seeing construction crews tear apart parking spaces.
And though she sympathizes with businesses’ concerns, Pierce said safety ultimately trumps parking.
Extensive crash data and studies collected between 2003 and 2007 show that Gandy Boulevard had experienced annual crash rates “well below” the statewide average during that span. But they also noted several areas in which “significant amounts of crashes have occurred.” Those areas all corresponded to the intersection of Brighton Bay Boulevard NE and the Derby Lane Greyhound Track entrance, an area close to Kahuna’s Bar & Grill and the Vegas Showgirls strip club, thus far the only business on the boulevard to reach a lease agreement with the DOT.

Wellington brothel owners the Chow brothers are embroiled in a legal fight over the final payment for work on the collapsed Palace Hotel job in central Auckland.
Chow Group’s case against Clearwater Construction went to the High Court at Auckland for mention yesterday but is yet to get a substantive hearing.
John and Michael Chow want to open a high-rise brothel on the site of the 124-year-old Palace Hotel, which was demolished in November after it began to collapse.
In May, Auckland-headquartered Clearwater won a building disputes adjudication that Chow Group must pay it $837,645.36, the fifth progress payment for the Palace. Adjudicator John Walton also approved the issue of a charging order over the land under a section of the Construction Contracts Act 2002.
That order leaves the Chows locked down, technically unable to sell or transfer the Palace site, which is opposite SkyCity. Charging orders usually expire after two years but can be renewed if Clearwater goes back to court.

Friday, July 8th, 2011

He then “changed his story,” reports said, telling them he was a crime victim who needed help and he would pay them to drive him.
But Joe Stillwell wasn’t really buying his story.
“If someone was really in trouble like he was saying, wouldn’t they come to the front door?” he said.
Stillwell, 33, who works for Pinellas County, said he remained calm, shared knowing glances with his wife and quickly formulated a plan.
“My goal was to play along with his story of needing help, to get him out of the house,” he said.
What the Stillwells didn’t know was that authorities were already searching for the man.
Deputies said that about 45 minutes before he showed up at the Stillwell home, Fox swiped a set of car keys off the bar at OZ Gentlemen’s Club in Clearwater and stole a 2007 Buick from the parking lot.
