Vogel approached Ezra Stead with little scraps of notes about two guys who go on a killing spree. Stead told Vogel that it was an awesome idea, and the two of them got to work writing the script. Eventually they cast Greg Hernandez, who also contributed to the dialogue.  
There were between 20 to 30 people involved in making The City, but Vogel said most everyone has at this point moved on to Hollywood. It took 16 days to shoot over the course of a couple months. The movie was shot almost entirely in Minneapolis, mostly in downtown. 
Amusingly, the filmmakers never bothered with getting permits for shooting outdoor scenes, and police ceased showed up three different times. The first occasion was actually the first day of shooting. The actresses who were dressed up as prostitutes apparently looked a bit too real, so someone alerted the cops. “It felt like such a disaster at the time,” Vogel laughs, “but it motivated me to just keep working on the film.”

Sakagawa said the CRA decided to make the deal for the property because of Parker Street Ministries’ track record.
“If I had to look at a list of neighborhoods, I probably would not have selected this one first but for this organization. They live there. They’ve walked the walk, and that’s what makes this work,” she said.
Mitchell said he sees “a new atmosphere of care and concern” in the neighborhood.
“It’s a whole different world from what it was when we first got there. There are still drugs and prostitution, but there’s a lot of really neat stuff happening. In a time of good excuses not to, people are helping each other,” he said.

To pimp its 31 Below frozen treat, which blends soft serve ice cream with a mind-boggling array of toppings, Baskin-Robbins hopped on the social networking bandwagon with a bizarre spokesperson at the helm: Jersey Shore “star” DJ Pauly D (birthed Paul Delvecchio).
While Pauly’s fellow castmates are stuck promoting nightclub openings and something called “Cosmetic Surgeon in a Jar,” Baskin-Robbins’ Facebook page and Twitter account invite visitors to “Mix it Up” with the star via an application that mimics, presumably, the process of creating a 31 Below treat. With Pauly D’s guidance, guests select musical and sound-effect tracks to create a cacophonous smattering of noise that sounds like the sugar rush accompanying a cappuccino-ice-cream-brownie-chunk-topping-with-rainbow-sprinkles blend.
So why would Baskin-Robbins want to hook up with a reality TV personality better known for his blowout hair, borderline alcoholism, and ridiculous chest-length “Cadillac” tattoo (GM, you paying attention)? Playing Mrs. Henry Miller, a young Ellen Burstyn has a lengthy opening scene with full-frontal nudity (and bedbugs) in Joseph Strick’s long-unseen 1970 version of Miller’s autobiographical novel “The Tropic of Cancer,” which oddly moves the action from Paris of the 1930s to the late 1960s.
Rip Torn, ideally cast as the randy Miller, still consorts with a variety of prostitutes, reciting large, lewd swaths of the book as voice-over narration. Very much a product of its time, this independently-produced film (the fearless Strick had previously filmed James Joyce’s “Ulysses”) was originally distributed by Paramount with an X rating. It now carries an NC-17 and would make an ideal double feature with the NC-17 biopic of Henry Miller and his mistress Anais Nin, “Henry and June.”
