Officials fear Arizona-type immigration law in Clearwater

CLEARWATER — They brought the woman to Florida from Guatemala, promising her a housekeeping job. Instead, they turned her into a prostitute.
And, according to Clearwater police, members of the sex trafficking ring gave her a chilling warning: Don’t even think about going to police. Cops, they told her, will show you no mercy.
From incidents like this, Clearwater police Chief Tony Holloway learned a lesson about mixing immigration policy with local law enforcement. People like the young woman — undocumented but the victim of a human-trafficking operation — are “not going to report the crime. That’s how you breed these organized crimes.”
This helps explain why Holloway wants no part of an Arizona-style immigration law in Florida.

PITTSFORD, N.Y. – Coach Chan Gailey’s has added more hitting to Buffalo Bills’ training camp and it has raised tensions on the practice field.
Centre Geoff Hangartner and linebacker Aaron Maybin exchanged shoves and wrestled each other to the ground midway through practice Friday morning. Things got heated after Maybin shoved running back Fred Jackson from behind and sent him sliding along the grass field.
NASHVILLE, Tenn. – It’s time for Jeff Fisher to open his 16th straight training camp with the Tennessee Titans, and that first practice Saturday will be a welcome return to football after a busy off-season.
Fisher expects Chris Johnson to show up, happy the Titans reshuffled some money to pay him more for 2010. Vince Young will be available for all 16 games, and Fisher hopes maybe more, with the NFL not punishing him for a Dallas strip club tussle in June.

TAMPA, Florida — Detectives say over the past couple of years, Hillsborough County has become a favorite target of identity thieves, a ring of them. They are made up of of criminals, prostitutes and drug users who have found the Tampa Bay area to be an easy target.
It’s a big city, packed with tourists who police say are too often careless with their wallets and purses.
“They know people forget to lock their cars, or sometimes leave their things out in plain view,” says Hillsborough Sheriff’s spokesman Larry McKinnon.
But this week, the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office says it arrested five members of the so-called “Felony Lane” gang after they tried to get cash from a Bank of America branch on N. Dale Mabry in Carrollwood.
A bank clerk who spotted the stolen ID’s and credit cards alerted law enforcement officials.

TAMPA – They asked for the Super Bowl Special.
As Tampa was gearing up for the football championship in 2009, undercover agents combed Craigslist for “erotic services” ads, looking for juvenile sex trafficking victims.
They spotted an ad that looked like an under-aged girl offering her services, and a Tampa Police detective placed a call.
The detective was quoted a price of $300 for two girls, and told to go to the Marriott Hotel at West Shore and Cypress.
At the hotel, the detective was met by an 18-year-old woman and a girl who claimed to be 17, but was actually 14. He gave them $300. After the woman took the money, law enforcement agents made their move.
Authorities say the 18-year-old has been a prostitute since the age of 16.

The identity theft scheme started with a loosely knit gang of criminals and prostitutes from South Florida and then spread across the country.
Members of the ring never gave themselves a name, but law enforcement officers did: “Felony Lane.”
The name comes from the gang’s tendency to use the drive-through lane farthest from the bank teller to cash stolen checks or make fraudulent withdrawals, said John Joyce, special agent in charge of the Tampa office of the U.S. Secret Service.
In the past couple of years, Hillsborough County has become a favorite target of the ring â whose members are known to travel across the state.

Prostitutes were recruited to snatch purses left in unlocked cars or unattended in public areas, he said. Most of the victims were women, as were the gang members who cashed the stolen checks.

St. Petersburg, Florida — Seven strippers and their boss have been arrested following a raid at Vegas Show Girls.
Pinellas sheriff’s deputies said six of the women were arrested for nudity-related charges, and one for possessing illegal drugs. Their boss was also arrested for allowing illegal activity at the establishment, they said.
Detectives said the arrests were part of an undercover investigation based on several citizen complaints in the past year about illegal activities at the bar, located on Gandy Boulevard in St. Pete.
Wednesday’s raid was the second time in as many months that detectives made arrests at the business. They say they observed on-stage performances that included total nudity.
The manager, Jonathan Bell, 36, was arrested along with exotic dancers:
All except Veldestra were charged with one count of nudity in an alcohol establishment. Veldestra was charged with one count each of possession of cocaine, and possession of marijuana.
