Tampa Strip Clubs: Years of trial, triumph

Thursday, December 31st, 2009

More people lived and worked downtown as the Centro Ybor entertainment complex and an assortment of new condo towers opened, the Tampa Bay History Center debuted, streetcars returned and the mayor’s Riverwalk project grew. Trump Tower Tampa never got off the ground, but a new Tampa Museum of Art (pictured) and Glazer Children’s Museum were approaching their debuts along the Hillsborough River at decade’s end.
9. DUBIOUS BEHAVIOR
Hillsborough County Supervisor of Elections Buddy Johnson left a budget deficit in the millions and a legacy of uneven leadership after being defeated in a re-election bid. The Lowry Park Zoo’s board of directors forced Lex Salisbury out of his job after investigations revealed he mixed the zoo’s assets and animals with those of a wild animal park in Polk County. State appeals court Judge Thomas E. Stringer resigned, and later pleaded guilty to bank fraud, after helping a stripper hide her financial assets from creditors. And Ralph Mervine resigned as executive director of the Tampa-Hillsborough County Expressway Authority in 2006 after it was learned he owned a pornography production company in San Diego.

Tampa Adult Entertainment: Despite naval forces, pirate attacks off Somalia nearly double

Wednesday, December 30th, 2009

Northern Somalia shows how efforts on the ground can translate into success.
The gains are starting to occur in the semi-autonomous region of Puntland, which wants a share of the $250 million pledged to Somalia at a U.N.-sponsored international donor’s conference in April to help stabilize the nation and fund humanitarian work.
Author Jay Bahadur, who has spent time in Puntland researching a book on piracy, said last January there was only one police checkpoint on the outskirts of the regional capital of Garowe, long a pirate boomtown. By June and July there were many more and authorities had begun to launch raids against suspected pirates, he said.
There has also been a local backlash against pirates, he said, because they indulge in un-Islamic behavior such as drinking and using prostitutes, and their spending of ransom money has triggered soaring inflation.

Tampa Adult Entertainment: Events that shaped the year

Wednesday, December 30th, 2009

Two high-profile Plant City murder cases moved through the courts during the year, including a life sentence for Benjamin James Wibben, 30, who pleaded guilty to two counts of first-degree murder and robbery in the 2005 slayings of Heather, 26, and Darren Kaiser, 37. The Plant City couple were shot and killed at the Internet car sales business they operated from their home. The killer stole a sports car and two laptops, authorities said.
In the other murder case, former First Baptist deacon Samuel L. Smithers lost an appeal of his death sentences for the 1996 murders of two Tampa prostitutes. The Florida Supreme Court refused to overturn lower court rulings to vacate Smithers’ convictions in the brutal slayings of Christy Elizabeth Cowan, 31, and Denise Elaine Roach, 24. The Tampa women were picked up in a seedy area of East Tampa and killed at a Plant City-area home where Smithers was caretaker.

The Coast Guard says that two of its tanks — containing an estimated 33,500 gallons of diesel fuel — were damaged.
On two separate occasions, diesel fuel sheens of one mile and three miles spread across the waters, but officials say no animals were injured and the fuel didn’t reach land.
The boat is part of a ship escort service created after the Exxon Valdez spilled nearly 11 million gallons of oil in 1989.

Tampa Strip Clubs: The Book Of Love According To Herr-Dawg

Saturday, December 26th, 2009

Winston: We’re at a strip club.
Herr-Dawg: Are we?  Huh.  I suppose we are.  Anyway, I’m a couple years older than you Winston, and, well, I feel like it’s my responsibility to share some wisdom with you.  This is a crazy game we play, and you never know what things will be like next week, let alone next year, and so I wanted to make sure we got some time to talk.  About serious stuff.
Winston: Serious stuff?
Herr-Dawg: About the most serious stuff, Winston.  About that which has inspired poets and artists for generations!  Love, Winston.  True love.

Herr-Dawg: It’s just.  You know, I come here to try to get away from those feelings of loss.  And I just can’t.  Everything reminds me of Zeus.  Like that stripper pole.  He loved peeing on poles.  Or the strobe lights.  He loved flashing lights.  Oh, I don’t know.
