Tampa Escorts: Three found dead after standoff

Monday, August 17th, 2009

TAMPA — Tampa police have arrested two men after authorities say a fight over line-cutting at a food cart led to the death of one man and the serious injury of another.
Police say 20-year-old Juan Martinez-Morales and 18-year-old Leeching-Hong Luberisse were both arrested Friday night and charged with second-degree murder, attempted murder and gun possession by a felon.
Police say Luberisse punched 27-year-old Eriberto Reyes while in line on Aug. 8. Then Martinez-Morales pulled a gun and shot Reyes three times in the abdomen. A stray bullet hit 23-year-old Alquan Garner, who was not involved in the fight.
Garner later died at a hospital from his wound, and Reyes remains in serious condition.
Police finally caught up with Martinez-Morales and Luberisse on Friday.

Tampa Adult Entertainment: Commissioner White marches through missteps

Sunday, August 16th, 2009

In 2001, White filed to run for Tampa City Council District 5. He proved an able fundraiser, raising $60,000 before the March 2003 election. He came out on top in the four-person race and faced his aunt, Bernadine White-King, in a runoff.
Three months after taking office, White unsuccessfully pushed to give city council members a 23 percent pay raise, from $28,974 to $35,600. He quit his job at St. Pete Jeep-Chrysler a month after making the proposal. He later took a job as security director for Rooms To Go in Tampa.
White made few headlines during his three years on the council, but he was appreciated by some East Tampa neighborhood leaders.
“We were trying to get prostitutes off several corners and get a house shut down where there were drugs,” said Gladys Jackson of the Rainbow Heights neighborhood. White “went to the police. He helped us get that shut down,” she said.

Tampa Escorts: Joe Popp’s music for "Pericles" is much better than show’s silly plot

Saturday, August 15th, 2009

TAMPA — Don’t think of Jobsite Theater’s Pericles as a rock version of Shakespeare. Except for the skeletal remains of one of his least-known plays, there’s virtually nothing of the bard in evidence.
The bare bones of the silly story are fleshed out with a barrage of great new songs by Tampa’s former pop-punk king Joe Popp, great performances by a large cast and a fairly clever script by Neil Gobioff and Shawn Paonessa.
The result is an occasionally unwieldy but mostly incredibly enjoyable hybrid of theater and concert.
Gobioff and Paonessa, the team that created the wonderful March of the Kitefliers, transplant Pericles from ancient Greece to modern New York. They obviously had a lot of fun making the transition, turning noblemen into mafiosi and trading Tarsus for Coney Island. And despite some rather harsh plot points (incest, murder, forced prostitution) they pretty successfully turn the story into comedy.

TAIPEI, Taiwan (AP) – Floods and mudslides unleashed by Typhoon Morakot last weekend have killed about 500 people on the island, Taiwan’s president said Friday as he called on rescue crews to step up their efforts. Morakot destroyed the homes of 7,000 people and caused agricultural and property damage in excess of 50 billion New Taiwan dollars ($1.5 billion), President Ma Ying-jeou said at a national security conference, the first called since he took office 15 months ago.
Residents on edge as 9 women vanish from N.C. city
ROCKY MOUNT, N.C. (AP) – They spent their nights jumping in and out of strange cars, trolling otherwise empty streets lined with decaying storefronts and boarded-up homes. Many sold sex to support drug habits or children left in the care of worried, hardworking grandmothers. Even when they were picked up for drugs or prostitution, nights in jail looming, they called home to let their families know they were OK. Then, one by one, the calls stopped.

Tampa Adult Entertainment: Stormy Daniels Arrested for Battery

Wednesday, August 12th, 2009

Updated: Friday, 31 Jul 2009, 10:03 AM PDTPublished : Friday, 31 Jul 2009, 10:02 AM PDT
NEW ORLEANS – It’s been a tough week for Louisiana-born porn star and U.S. senator wannabe Stormy Daniels.
Daniels was arrested Saturday on a domestic violence battery charge after she allegedly hit her husband at their home in Tampa, Fla. Police said the dispute was about laundry and unpaid bills.
Her arrest came two days after her political adviser in Louisiana, Brian Welsh, said his 1996 Audi was blown up by someone on July 23 outside his apartment in an upscale downtown area of New Orleans.
Daniels has stirred up a U.S. Senate race in Louisiana after she said she was considering to run against the incumbent, Republican Sen. David Vitter. His family-values reputation was marred in 2007 when his name was linked to a Washington prostitution ring.

Tampa Strip Clubs: Strip clubs feel customers’ pain in slumping economy

Strip clubs feel customers’ pain in slumping economy
Tribune photo by FRED BELLET
At local clubs such as the Brass Flamingo in Port Richey, dancers sometimes outnumber patrons. The sluggish economy is forcing many dancers to work longer hours.

TAMPA – Men are looking for something more from strip clubs during this slumping economy: a bare shoulder to cry on.

In a metro area that offers more strip clubs than Las Vegas, managers are struggling to stimulate the local exotic-dancing economy.

Some of the 41 remaining Bay area strip clubs reported spending thousands of dollars improving their businesses for the Super Bowl. A few added VIP “champagne rooms,” where customers get a private dance and a bottle of the bubbly.

Some establishments responded by bringing in guest stars from the adult entertainment industry. Amy Fisher, known as the Long Island Lolita for shooting the wife of her former lover, danced in July at Déjà Vu strip club on Adamo Drive.

Joining together to take on crime

TAMPA – Frank Gegunde knows the effect a neighborhood watch group can have.
About three years ago, his West Tampa neighborhood park, Capaz Park, began harboring drug dealers and prostitutes. He organized his neighbors into the Capaz Area Crime Watch and asked city officials to help reduce the crime they were seeing.
Soon lights were installed, a new fence erected and houses where drug deals occurred torn down.
“It works,” Gegunde said. “If you have problems with any neighborhood, you can make your voice heard with a neighborhood crime watch.”
Gegunde and at least a dozen other members of the crime watch group met for dinner in Macfarlane Park during the Aug. 4 National Night Out celebration.
