Tampa Strip Clubs: Feds charge former 2nd DCA Judge Thomas Stringer with mortgage fraud

Thursday, July 23rd, 2009

TAMPA — Former Judge Thomas E. Stringer Sr. was charged Thursday with fraudulently obtaining a mortgage on a Hawaii home he bought with a stripper.
The charge was filed in Tampa federal court.
He will plead guilty to one count of bank fraud, according to a plea agreement that was also filed.

The charges stemmed from allegations aired in local media during the spring of 2008. Christy Yamanaka, a New York City stripper, said Stringer helped her hide her assets and income after a judge threw out her bankruptcy petition and ordered her to pay creditors about $315,000.
The stripper and Stringer had been friends for about 15 years. They met at what was then Malio’s restaurant on Dale Mabry Highway, when he was still a circuit judge in Tampa.

Former Hillsborough County Supervisor of Elections Buddy Johnson, whose stewardship of the office during the 2008 elections has been the focus of numerous Times stories and federal officials. He could take the fall for misusing federal voting grants designed to inform and motivate voters but instead used to pimp his failed candidacy.
Thomas E. Stringer Sr., the 2nd District Court of Appeal judge who quit after being linked to a stripper who shared finances with him and accused the judge of helping her hide her assets from creditors. News Channel 8 and the Tampa Tribune broke that story.

Tampa Strip Clubs: U of C standout gunned down

Thursday, July 23rd, 2009

Marcus Wesley, a former football star at the University of the Cumberlands, was gunned down outside the Sin City strip club in Tampa, Fla. Monday morning. He was set to make his return to the field this fall after a series of events forced him to take a two year break from his college career.
According to an article published by the St. Petersburg Times, Hillsborough County deputies responded to reports of gunfire outside the strip club. When deputies arrived, they found shell casings but none of the individuals reportedly involved in the shooting were at the scene.

The St. Petersburg Times also noted that Hillborough County Jail records show Wesley had been arrested six times on such charges as grand theft of a motor vehicle, possession of cocaine, and aggravated battery. The strip club where Wesley was shot had less than a stellar reputation as well, with over 100 law enforcement calls to the address in the past four years and one previous murder on its premises.

Tampa Strip Clubs: Federal prosecutor from Tampa: Public corruption charge coming

Thursday, July 23rd, 2009

A number of local sitting and former public officials have drawn scrutiny recently from federal authorities:
•?Thomas E. Stringer Sr., a veteran judge on the 2nd District Court of Appeal, resigned in February amid allegations that he took gifts from a stripper and helped conceal her assets. According to formal misconduct charges filed by the Judicial Qualifications Commission, Stringer provided the woman with access to bank accounts opened in his name to hide her assets and income after a judge threw out her bankruptcy petition and ordered her to pay creditors.
He also listed himself as the sole title holder on an investment property in Hawaii that Christy Yamanaka helped purchase, according to the charges.
The JQC dropped the ethics complaint after Stringer agreed to never again serve as a judge, but the stripper said that the FBI had been investigating the case.

Tampa Strip Clubs: Bogus Billboards: Florida Council Peddles Religious Right Propaganda

Wednesday, July 22nd, 2009

For example, one of the messages attributes this quote to George Washington: “It is impossible to rightly govern the world without God and the Bible.”
We know Washington never said that. Even Wallbuilders’ David Barton, a Religious Right propagandist who for years has pushed a fundamentalist “Christian nation” view of American history, admits that quote can’t be documented.
In 1996, after years of using similar quotes from our Founding Fathers, Barton issued a list of 12 quotations he admitted were “questionable,” and advised his followers to stop using them.
It’s clear the truth seems to be lost on Community Issues Council (CIC), the group behind these billboards. CIC seeks to “promote and protect Judeo-Christian values” and first came onto the scene in 2005 when its members worked to shut down a strip club in Valrico, Fla.

PLANT CITY – A former Baptist deacon has lost an appeal of his death sentences for the 1996 murders of two Tampa prostitutes.
The Florida Supreme Court refused to overturn lower court rulings to vacate the convictions of 56-year-old Samuel L. Smithers, who was condemned for the brutal killings of Christy Elizabeth Cowan and Denise Elaine Roach. The women, both mothers, were picked up in a seedy area of East Tampa and killed at a Plant City home where Smithers was the caretaker.
Smithers was a deacon and groundskeeper at First Baptist Church of Plant City. The sensational killings and trial inspired a book, “Deacon of Death,” by former New York Times columnist Fred Rosen.
