Early Bird Dinner Theatre’The Owl and the Pussycat’
CLEARWATER – The Owl and the Pussycat plays Thursday through Saturday, July 9-Aug. 23, at Early Bird Dinner Theatre, 200 S. McMullen Booth Road. Seating for evening performances begins at 4 with seating for matinees at 11 a.m.
This classic comedy by Bill Manhoff takes place in a San Francisco loft where aspiring author, Felix, watches his neighbor, Doris a lady of the night. He complains to the landlord, has her evicted and finds he has trouble pounding on his door in the form of Doris, not a prostitute but an aspiring “model and actress”, thank you very much. She figures he owes her a bed for the night, an arrangement that leads to hilarity.
Artistic Director Robin New is directing a terrific cast that includes Tom Bronson, as Felix, and Jonelle Marie Meyer, as Doris.

District setting up meeting for coach facing solicitation charge

TAMPA – Spoto High baseball coach Larry Benton must meet with the Hillsborough school district’s professional standards staff following his arrest Saturday on a misdemeanor charge of soliciting another to commit prostitution.
School district spokeswoman Linda Cobbe said today that because it is summer, no action following the arrest has immediately been taken.
“We are still in the process of trying to get him a letter telling him he needs to meet with professional standards and discuss the situation,” Cobbe said.
Benton, 50, was arrested at 6500 N. Nebraska Ave. He was booked into the Hillsborough County Jail at 2:39 a.m. Saturday and released that morning after posting $250 bail.
Benton has been Spoto’s baseball coach since the program started in 2007. A 1977 King High grad, Benton also has had coaching stints at Tampa Bay Tech and Leto high schools.

It is the second consecutive year Grajales was named the recipient of the Mr. Florida award and the fifth consecutive year the honor has gone to a Brandon wrestler. Grajales, a recent Brandon graduate who will continue his wrestling career at the University of Michigan, finished his senior season 67-0 and won the Class 2A 135-pound state championship. For his prep career at Brandon, Grajales finished 219-0 and as a four-time state champ.
Cozart earned the state’s top coaching honor after leading the Eagles to their ninth consecutive state title (the program’s 20th overall title), one that came in record-setting fashion. Cozart coached a state-record seven individual champs and all 12 wrestlers he took to the state championships in Lakeland placed in the top five, helping the Eagles set a state record with 270 points.

Stogies helped transform “Tampa town” from a sleepy fishing village with 700 residents in 1885 to a thriving city of 108,000 two decades later. Back then, 159 factories employed some 13,000 workers as cigar rollers and tobacco strippers.

Recent prostitution sting yields 19 arrests in Plant City

Officers are cracking down on prostitution near the downtown historic district, where they say sex has been for sale for as little as $4.
In the past few weeks, the police department has arrested three women ranging in age from 23 to 38 and 16 men ranging in age from 22 to 73. Police have periodically battled prostitution over the years but they say the recent spike is because of the low prices sometimes charged by the women. Sexual favors are being sold for as little as $4 to $20, police said.

Undercover officers targeted women walking the streets and soliciting in the prostitution-plagued area, while a plainclothes female officer brought in more arrests.
Police say they will continue to monitor the situation and conduct periodic prostitution stings.

TAMPA – The Cuban sandwich at Hugo’s Spanish Restaurant on South Howard Avenue is cited for best sandwich honors in Playboy’s online issue this month, sharing space with lobster rolls from Nantucket and cheesesteaks from Philadelphia.
The most expensive sandwich on the list, the lobster roll, is available at the Straight Wharf Fish Store on Massachusetts’ Nantucket Island. The sandwich tips the scales at $17.95.
The cheapest offering is the St. Paul’s sandwich at Wong’s Inn in Maplewood, Mo. The egg foo yong, bean sprout and minced white onion concoction costs a mere $2.40.
The brief description of the $5.87 Hugo’s Cuban tells how the sandwich is assembled and mentions that it was first made by Tampa Cuban immigrants in the early 1900s.
The unnamed writer mentions the Mons Venus adult club (after all, this is Playboy) and calls Tampa “our favorite Gulf Coast stripper haven.”
